Bonking mad Welsh miners!

Bonking mad Welsh miners!

Welsh miners made a huge contribution to the local workforce and it was even reported they could be heard singing underground from the pit head.  Their influence may explain the name of one of Golborne’s best known landmarks, "the Bonk" (now the site of Golborne Park). Originally the coal mine's slag heaps, its unusual name may stem from the Welsh word "bonc" meaning hill or mound.
